What is Windsurfing?

Windsurfing is the use of wind power to navigate the surface of the water with a ship attached to a board. Sailing evolved from sailing when sailors decided to shorten the sport by using a board instead of a boat.

The sport of windsurfing has been around for ages, also known as sailboarding or board sailing. The sport has evolved over the years and has become very accessible with the development of lightweight equipment, with lots of windshield kits also available.

The surfboard, usually between 2m and 5m, is powered by the ship’s air. The board is attached to the rig with a universal joint, which is freely pivoted; made with rig mast, mast base, boom, and ship.

Unlike shipwreck (which is guided by the rudder), the windshield mast and the slope of the ship perform the removal action, boarding, and cutting movements.

Therefore, the control of the surfboard depends on the air and water skill of the person. Windsurfing is more adventurous than sailing and requires high fitness and agility. The windsurfer moves and settles faster than the ship and can perform strange feats such as high wind speed and jumping, both of which are not possible on the ship.

Windsurfing History

In 1948, Newman Darby, 20, of the United States, designed a Catamaran-like floating board on which he sailed. 1964, he created a universal compound to connect the rig’s flagpole with the ship.

In 1965, Darby give it a name “sailboarding” – but never went for a patent. Not surprisingly, California Dodgers sailor Jim Drake and surfer Hoyle Schweitzer‌ were taken from where Darby left off.

In the 1960s, after much discussion (they did not know the concept of Darby), they came up with an interesting crossbreed idea for sailing and surfing, which combines the structure and gravity of a ship with wind and gravity.

Who still believes in the invention of the windsurfer in the 1970s by Drake and Schweitzer’s Windsurfer patent – invented by California or Darby (or, Englishman Peter Chilvers , or the young Australian Richard Astog ).

Yet the windsurfing catches the wildfire. The bug crossed the Atlantic in the 1970s. Soon, as the number of participants in the water increased, a windsurfing tour (and other competitions) began. It eventually recognized it – the venue for the Olympic Games (Los Angeles, 1984).

How much air do you need to do windsurfing?

You do not need much air. You can walk on your windshield until you feel some air on the skin. Very windy for basic windsurfing at 5 miles (8 km) per hour. This is far less than what is required for kiteboarding. Fast windsurfing requires 10-15 mph. Beginners may have difficulty wind shielding more than 15 miles, but some professionals can windsurfing at winds of 35 miles or more.

Do you have good windsurfing places in India?

Windsurfing Destinations In India Are Great! Some places with flat water pools and lakes have excellent conditions and are beautiful. There are also some great waves off the Indian coast to catch your windsurfer.

If you are looking for windsurfing in India, see what equipment they have in advance as they have limited access to modern equipment connected to the windsurfing school. There are no gear surfing shops selling gear in India and all gears are imported.

Domestic windsurfing equipment has not yet met international standards and gear must be imported to gain the highest level of expertise (and competition). Windsurfing is largely restricted to Navy and Army sailing clubs in India, none of which are available to the public.

Calangute, Candolim Beaches, is the only place where an enthusiast can study windsurfing (and rental equipment). Recently came the Water Sports Center at Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai (windsurfing equipment is available here).

Organized courses are offered by the National Institute of Water Sports in Caransalem (near Panaji, Goa). Training on the entire range of watersports (conducted by the Ministry of Tourism). However, NIW is still in the planning stage; Training takes place only when the required number of trainees are enrolled for a particular program.

Windsurfing equipment can be rented at NIW. The best places to go for windsurfing in India are Goa (Donna Paula, Calangute) and Mumbai (outside Cafe Parade, Chowpatty, Juhu, and Marv). Windsurfing can be done on the lakes and dams around Pune (Pavana, Punshet, Mulshi, Khadakwasla).

Security First –

Check Your Equipment :-

It should be clear to each windsurfer to check the condition of their devices. Broken power joints or broken ropes, as well as loose footprints or a properly adjusted shipping style, can lead to an emergency.

Give information to the water port : –

When you are planning a long windsurfing trip, you should leave the following information to the water port Center or with friends: Where are you going? When do you expect to be back? Places where you want to relax along the way? The color of your ship?

The flow of current –

It is difficult to detect currents from the coast. If negative, strong currents can become deceptive because you cannot swim or swim against them. There are inland watersheds as a result of tidal surges, ebb, and flooding. Open valleys pose a threat to lives. However, these are best indicated by good warning signs.

All currents coming through the open ocean are the result of a tidal wave.

In an emergency –

Row or wait or call for help later – this is a very difficult decision: interrupt or leave your ship if possible. On the other hand, you may have to wait to escape and use your prepared rig as an anchor to prevent yourself from drifting, especially against strong, strong winds. Wind paddling makes it very difficult. To get back to shore, you have to face the distance without any problems.

Wet suits and accessories

A good wet suit is like a second skin on the body without restricting the freedom of movement of the body and arms. Sensitive neoprene insulates better than rigid neoprene, however, unfortunately, they can be damaged. Many Cold Protection wet suits are provided.

Shoes

It is advisable to wear boots when windsurfing. It not only keeps your feet warm from the cold but also protects you from injuries and leg cramps. Also, the shoes give you a secure grip on the board. Only in very warm places, with water temperatures above 25 degrees and air temperatures above 30 degrees, well-drained sand, wearing shoes is unnecessary and can sometimes cause problems.

Environmental concerns

As the sport is practiced in the water, surfers do not cause significant damage to the marine ecosystem. However, respect the sea – don’t make it the worst!
